The Genealogy of the Vile Family
The purpose of this site is to present as full an account of the Vile family history as possible, including the origins of the
name, the names of all the members of the family that I can find, and as detailed a history of my own branch of the family as I can. The initial emphasis will be on Somerset, where my ancestors
lived for centuries. Then I hope to extend its scope to Devon, Cornwall, and Hampshire, and eventually perhaps to Kent.
In the following pages I have divided up the details of the records between Glastonbury, where my family lived in the
18th. and 19th. centuries, Seavington St. Mary in South Somerset, where my family came from, and a separate list for South Petherton, where the
sheer number of entries suggests that this was the origin of the clan in Somerset. I have also collated a general list of the other entries for the
Viles of Somerset, divided into two pages. Of course I have not yet included all the Viles of Somerset, but I will be adding names as I find them.
There is also a page of members of the family in Dorset, most of whom come from an area just across the border with Somerset, not far from
Seavington. There is also an essay on the origins of our name, and a chart of my direct ancestors and descendants. Please use the links on the left
to navigate between pages.
The lists of names in these pages have been compiled from a number of sources. Errors may well have crept in. Any
comments would be welcome. Contact me on mjcvile1@hotmail.co.uk
I am grateful to Colin Rayner for his advice and to Kevin Redpath for permission to use his stunning pictures of
Glastonbury.
